What is National Non-Profit Day?

National Non-Profit Day recognizes nonprofits’ impacts on their communities and the world.

Key Dates:

  • August 17th - National Non-Profit Day, recognized annually on August 17th

  • August 27, 1894 - Wilson-Gorman Tariff Act

  • Historical Timeline:

    • 1775: First nonprofit organization, Pennsylvania Abolition Society, founded 

    • 1867: First nonprofit foundation, the Peabody Education Fund, founded 

    • 1917: Individual income tax deduction for charitable donations created 

    • 1969: 501(c)3 tax-exempt status created for qualified nonprofits 

    • 2017: First National Nonprofit Day celebrated 

History:

  • “National Nonprofit Day has roots back to 1894, when the United States Congress passed the Tariff Act on August 17th that effectively allowed non-profit’s and charitable organizations to be exempt from paying taxes.” - Anedot

  • Sherita J. Herring, a renowned speaker, best-selling author and business strategist, founded National Nonprofit Day to educate, enlighten and empower others to make a difference, while acknowledging those that are in the trenches, impacting lives every day – the Change-Makers of the World!

  • The Registrar at National Day Calendar declared National Nonprofit Day to be observed annually in 2017(National Day Calendar is not affiliated with the state or federal government)

Importance:

  • To recognize and acknowledge the nonprofit sector’s impact and highlight the importance of charitable organizations for our local communities and nationwide.

  • In the fourth quarter of 2021, nonprofits contributed $1.4 trillion to the U.S. economy (causeartist.com)

  • Nonprofits account for 12.3 million jobs

  • In 2022, the nonprofit sector is continuing to adapt to the ever-changing global environment. According to the latest statistics released by Blackbaud, total charitable giving in the United States increased 5.6% in the past 12 months ending in September 2022 compared to the previous 12 months ending September 2021.(causeartist.com)

Ways to celebrate:

For Non-Profits:

  • Start a fundraising campaign

  • Thank existing donors for their loyal support, share updates, and invite additional contributions

  • Seek out and strengthen corporate partnerships

  • Promote your annual gala or other important fundraising events

  • Spotlight your team, clients/community, donors, and/or partner organizations 

For Everyone:

  • Donate to non-profits focused on the causes you care about

  • Volunteer your time  

  • Amplify non-profit missions digitally  (like, follow, comment, subscribe, and SHARE) content from non-profit organizations

  • Invite your network to: donate, volunteer, & amplify

The goal of nonprofit organization is to improve people’s quality of life.
